Physical Education

Physical Education

We believe Physical Education is a central part of our pupil’s wellbeing.

Physical education provides children with learning opportunities through the medium of movement and contributes to their overall development by helping them to lead full, active and healthy lives.

Here in the Mercy Convent each class is timetabled for 60 minutes P.E. lessons every week, during which the full Primary School P.E. Curriculum is delivered. This covers the six strands:

  • Games
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Outdoor and Adventure
  • Aquatics
  • Athletics

Outdoor and Adventure

This year we have focused on developing the Outdoor and Adventure Strand of the curriculum in P.E. Mr. Ruane very kindly agreed to share his expertise in this area with the whole school. During the month of April he took each class in the school and brought teacher and students through the different stages of orienteering. The photostar orienteering was a great hit with all and the children ended up covering a lot more kilometres than they realised!

Each class grouping also had their own extra activities that their teachers had prepared. There was a great buzz about the school and the beautiful weather helped too. Have a look below at all of our Outdoor and adventure photos and see our orienteering activities, scavenger hunts, co-operative games and challenges and even a hoola hoop hut!

Aquatics

Sadly due to Covid 19 restrictions we couldn’t attend our local school for swimming lessons this year. Hopefully we will be back in September!

In the meantime our 3rd and 4th classes completed the Landpaws programme for our Aquatic Strand. It was very enjoyable with lots of learning and discussion. We really enjoyed playing the wide variety of interactive games on our new ipads!!!

Well done to all
